As the film Mockingjay, the adaptation of the third book in the popular Hunger Games series, prepares for its November 2014 release, news from production company Lionsgate suggests increased emphasis on the darker side of the story. Lionsgate released the first character posters in early August, and fans immediately noticed the emphasis on concrete and shades of grey. The posters feature characters standing in front of a blank concrete wall, with a district number and character name often the only other features in the posters besides a single actor.
In each poster, the actor stands either perpendicular or parallel to the wall behind him or her. The earliest posters featured most of the major characters in the film including game maker Plutarch, Games victor Finnick, and rebellion leader President Coin. Katniss’ absence from film promotional materials seems to fans to be a continuing trend and has become a source of much speculation. Some suggest that because Lionsgate is presenting its promotional materials as media created within the world of the story, the absence of the main character indicates an upcoming revelation about life inside the fictional District 13.
